Safety and Machinery Use at Western Woodworkers

Western Woodworkers is friendly and casual, but the workshop is still a place where safety matters.

Mitre Saw

Members use hand tools and machinery to work on their own projects. The club has lathes, saws, sanding equipment and other machinery that can help members complete a wide range of timber work. That equipment needs to be used responsibly.

Certification before independent machinery use

Members need to be certified before using machinery independently. Certification happens as needed, depending on the machine, the member’s experience and the kind of project they want to work on.

This requirement is not there to make the club difficult to join. It is there so members can use equipment safely, understand the workshop expectations and build confidence before working independently.

PPE, dust extraction and consumables

The club has dust extractors and other safety equipment. Members are encouraged to bring their own PPE and consumables where possible, although some are available at the club.

If you are unsure what you need for a project, ask. Members can often help you think through materials, tools, PPE and the safest way to approach the work.

What visitors should know

Visitors are welcome to inspect the workshop and watch a session, but visitors cannot do woodworking during a first visit for insurance reasons.

If you want to understand the equipment before joining, read tools and equipment or plan your first visit.
