Woodworking for Beginners in St Marys

If you have wanted to try woodworking but have never been quite sure where to start, Western Woodworkers is a comfortable place to take the first step.

You do not need to arrive with a workshop at home, a long list of finished projects, or years of experience behind you. Some members have been working with wood for a long time. Others are newer, returning after a break, or still building confidence.

Western Woodworkers does not run formal classes. The club works more naturally than that. Members bring their own projects, talk through ideas, watch how others approach a task, and draw on the experience in the room.

How beginners can start

A first visit is a chance to meet members, inspect the workshop, look at the equipment and see what happens on a normal club day. For insurance reasons, visitors cannot do woodworking during that first visit, but you are welcome to watch, ask questions and get a feel for the club.

Once you become a member, you can bring materials for a project you would like to work on. If you are not sure what to make first, the member projects page can help you see the range of work people do at the club.

Learning safely

Health and safety matters in the workshop. Members need to be certified before using machinery independently, and certification happens as needed. That means you can build confidence without being expected to know everything on day one.

The club has hand tools, lathes, a table saw, thicknesser/planer, combination machine, morticer, drum sander, bandsaw, mitre saw, dust extractors and other safety equipment. You can read more about the workshop on the tools and equipment page.

Your next step

The easiest next step is to come along on a club day. Read the first visit guide or the membership FAQ if you would like to know what happens before you arrive.
